When I decided to create my video installation I first researched some video artists to have a look at their work for inspiration and sort of a guideline as to what video art is. In particular Bill viola was a big inspiration for me as he says that he was inspired by a time that he almost drowned as a child. I feel this has helped me as it sort of gives an example as to what video art can be as it can be seen as a way of expressing pain. This formed my first idea which was based around the idea of someone walking into a room swallowing a tablet and playing a small tune before the camera fades to black. Despite doing the proposal and shot list this idea ended up failing and so I decided to form a new idea. The new idea that I decided to form was one based around color reflecting emotion which is one that I somewhat gathered from Bill as well due to his piece that he did on the reflection of fire and water.
As well as this, as a class at the start of the project we decided to go to the contemporary art museum in order to learn some history and gain some knowledge on video art. I do feel that this trip was useful as it allowed me to set a tone for what video art is. From this research I could see how video art can be conceptually dark when referring to tone and that is where many of my ideas such as loneliness or concepts about the dark spurred from.
After making the decision to take up my second Idea against my first the first thing I did was write my proposal once more so that it was appropriate to my new idea, after I had done this I then moved on to completing my shot list so that when it came to filming my new attempt at my experimental video. I then began my storyboard so I had a visual representation of what my finished product and so I could structure my filming around this idea. After that I was essentially ready for filming but before doing so I ensured that I had my health and safety completed so I was ready for filming and I knew what could go wrong. It was only once filming had been completed or begun that I began to gather other pieces of pre production such as consent forms from the actors and completed call sheets signed from the actors.
After this I then went to film for the second time hoping that this footage would come out overall better than prior. The filming was overall very successful, however I do think that my time could have been handled better as I did waste a decent amount of time filming for my first attempt edit however I do think that the first attempt at filming was a good teaching experience for this next one. Once the filming was finished the editing process was rather smooth as there wasn't much editing that actually had to be done aside from a skeleton edit and some minor background sound. The only other thing I added to my video editing wise was just a fade on some text at the beginning of the video and arranging the video in a mesmerizing way.
Overall I think I could have managed my time better within this project as I did end up wasting a lot of time working on my initial idea when it didn't turn out as good as what came afterwards. Some knowledge that I'm going to take forward from this project is to fully think about what ideas I could implement into something before going through with my first idea. Video installations have allowed me to widen my horizons when it comes to producing creative content and I think it is going to help me especially when it comes to my music video within the future as experimental videos have a lot of emphasis on sight and can transition well into music videos. I therefore believe this will be an effective aid if I intend to make a more abstract music video or one with flashy visuals.
