This is the finished screening report with images to go with it.
Overall I would say that the screening was a success and that the people viewing really enjoyed and appreciated both the décor of the room as well as the people acting that came through to perform, even the food and the film itself seemed to satisfy people rather well. Personally I would say that the interactive screening did its job and did it well as I think it made people feel more immersed within the film and overall have a more positive experience. For the project itself I created the poster as I was a part of the marketing department, as well as this I also helped create the golden ticket, assisted in decorating the room, so it was relevant to the film, and finally I tallied up the results from the people who viewed the film and placed them into category’s so the class can get the data easier.
Personally I believe that market research is extremely important when organizing a certain event as it allows you to gain a perspective from your target audience. This is imperative to organizing an event as you can organise it appropriately and suit not only what the majority would like, but as well as this try and please more of the minority of people so that more people are pleased with the outcome. There are other reasons as to why market research may be done for example we provided a survey to find out if and what allergy’s people in the audience may have so that we can plan and prepare otherwise. As a result we actually decided to conduct our own quantitative research on the matter.Specifically we learned that 5 people were vegetarian, another 5 were lactose intolerant, 3 were vegan and 2 ate halal food, this as a result had an effect on the food we had to bring as we had to make sure every person was eligible to have something that we provide.I also believe that marketing is very important when getting the word out about a certain event and or product, I believe this to be true because the feedback we have collected from the people who filled out the question sheet shows to us how many people heard about the end mainly because of our input. From the feedback we can see that 10 people heard about the screening from posters that we placed around, 7 people saw the post on Facebook that was advertising the event and 6 people say they knew about the entire thing through an interactive visit that was done between me Rory, Aiden, Reegan and Sam in order to promote the event. The marketing also proved to be a success as when the screening came around we managed to garner the attention of four level 2 students that did not have to attend the screening but still chose to within their own time as they heard about it via the visit we conducted with Santa and his elves. From this we can as a result learn how being more interactive and outgoing within marketing can engage people a lot more and promote your product, idea or event therefore making it far more successful.
I do not believe that film spectatorship is a just a passive experience although I do however believe that it is widely done by many people. I do also feel however that many people do not watch films passively and are widely integrated into the 'culture' that an engaged viewing comes with. This idea is supported by the uses and gratifications theory which gives reason as to why people tend to watch films for example some people use films as a source of escapism and get very involved within certain films in their spare time. On the contrary a much better example would be the social aspect of the uses and gratifications theory as for films such as star wars people tend to form large groups and social cultures just because of one or a franchise of films. This would therefore counteract the idea that watching films is a passive form of entertainment due to the experiences and personal relationships people can gain from them. An interactive screening is far different from a normal screening you may have in the cinema as the experience within an interactive screening is far livelier and gives off the impression that you are a part of the movie. I think by viewing an interactive film you can get a far greater understanding as to the cultures films tend to influence and the affects it has on them as well as the amount of effort and time people tend to devote into these experiences and groups. As well as these two points some people also like to engage within film in order to develop their own personal Identity, the meaning behind this being that people will associate themselves with this genre or film in particular and either learn something from it that can relate to them as a person that they will carry with them or on the other hand they may act In some way that the film is trying to showcase to the audience. The second of these points more than often being better lessons rather than negative ones. Another reason why I believe that film spectatorship isn't a passive experience is due to the theory of the hypodermic needle theory, which essentially brings the idea to the table that when watching a film or a piece of media you subconsciously take in information and messages from it. For example when watching our film the polar express a view could speak about how they gained a better understanding for the meaning of Christmas from the viewing we brought forward.
From our results that we gained from our audience we learned that overall, 18 of the people spoke about how they enjoyed the overall experience of the film being interactive showing that our screening was a success and our audience did gain something from our screening. As well as this 3 people specifically spoke about how they gained a better understanding of not only what an interactive screening is but the impact it has on an audience and the type of community it can build. I feel this is especially important as allowing people to gain a better understanding my influence them to not only attend another but engage with it in their spare time or just share with people what they thought of it and potentially get others to come along.
Some key skills that I will be taking from this entire experience is the impact that teamwork has on a project as if it wasn't for all of us putting in effort then I do not believe that the outcome would have been as good as it was. In fact I believe that teamwork played a very integral role throughout the entire project as we all had to be aware of what everyone was doing so that we could act accordingly, for example whoever created the allergen survey had to then work with the food group in order to find and serve the most suitable food. Not only this but communication is another skill that I believe I have developed that I will carry onwards into the future whether that be in the way of being able to spread information to mass people or just to talk to the people amongst me so we can organise and clarify what we are doing. As an example I think my communication skills when talking to either a large audience or when spreading news about something have increased as going around and spreading the news about our screening really pushed me out of my comfort zone. As well as this some information that I intend to take into the future is the importance of feedback as some of the feedback we received on this project was both insightful and constructive. The feedback we gained varied from constructive criticism on how to improve the viewing to an overall review on how good and or bad the actual screening was. This knowledge of what people think of my work and what people think of me as a person is very useful to me as it can show me how to evolve and grow in all aspects of my life improving what is bad and perfecting what is already good.
Overall I would say that our interactive cinema experience was a success. I believe that a lot of things factor into the success of this screening not only the screening itself but what we have learnt from it. I’d say the screening itself was very effective in getting the audience engaged within the film both before and during the screening, I think the actors played a pivotal role within screening as the fact they could see some of the characters in front of them made them feel a lot more within the film. As well as this I also believe the feedback emphasizes are success as not only did people state how they thought our screening was enjoyable and or impressive, but we also were able to attain constructive feedback which very much allowed us to see where we went wrong and what we can Improve upon. For me this is seen as a success as these ideas that the audience have brought forward are things that I will be able to apply to my future work In order to suit my future target audience and make each and every piece of work that I do just that bit better than the one prior.
