Characteristics of dystopian society:

Propaganda used to control citizens

Independent thought/ freedom restricted

A worshiped figurehead

Citizens under surveillance

fear of outside world

Living in dehumanized state

Natural world is banished and disturbed


There are also types of Dystopian control such as:

Corporate- One or more large corporation controls society through products, advertising or some other form of purchasable item and or idea.

Bureaucratic- Society is controlled via mindless bureaucracy through tangle of red tape.

Technological- Society controlled by technology via computers/ robots.

Philosophical/ religious- Society controlled by a certain ideology often controlled via a dictator.

Dystopian protagonist:

Often trapped and struggling to escape

Questions social and political systems

Believes something is wrong with society

helps the audience to recognize this
